The Arantus Calendar

The Arantus year is 360 days. Arantus has one moon that completes its orbit once every thirty days. Thus, in most cultures, the year is divided into 12 months of 30 days based on the lunar cycle.

In Ardwen, the months are named Jarantus, Febrantus, Marantus, Aprantus, Mayantus, Junantus, Julantus, Augantus, Sepantus, Octantus, Novantus, and Decantus. The four seasons begin on Jarantus 1 (Winter), Aprantus 1 (Spring), Julantus 1 (Summer), and Octantus 1 (Autumn).

The week is six days, thus there are exactly five weeks per month and 60 weeks per year. The days of the week are named in honor of the six most popular dieties: Erathday, Iounday, Corellday, Moraday, Korday, and Pelorday. Of these, Erathday is given the distinction of being a holy day of rest.

Erathday always falls on the 1st (as well as 7th/13th/19th/25th) day of the month. Iounday always falls on the 2nd/8th/14th/20th/26th day of the month, and so forth.

The campaign opens on the first day of spring in the year 1010—Erathday, Aprantus 1, 1010 A.G. (After the Gifting Time).

DM’s Note: Why create a fantasy calendar with seasons and months that are so familiar to us? For that very reason – a familiar calendar is one that we can easily relate to. If the players are told, “It’s a bitter cold day in the middle of Febrantus”, they’ll know exactly what I’m talking about! (At the least players who inhabit Earth’s northern hemisphere will know!)
